who need assistance. For active, independent seniors who want to assure continuation of a
satisfying lifestyle in their retirement, Westminster Canterbury offers unsurpassed peace
of mind.
A full range of services and activities
specifically designed for an active lifestyle are offered at

Established as a nonprofit corporation in 1975 by
the Episcopal Diocese of Southwestern Virginia and The Synod of
the Mid-Atlantic of the Presbyterian Church, Westminster
Canterbury opened Its doors on July 14, 1980, with residential
apartments and the 105 -bed Drinkard Health Center. A beautiful
bridge connecting the apartment towers and the health center
highlighted this architectural award-winning facility. Dining,
beauty and barber shops, recreational and meeting facilities,
banking, postal and administrative areas also were part of the
community.
As
the dynamics of our population and seniors in general changed, it became evident that
additional levels of care and living arrangements were required. To meet these changing
needs, the new 78-bed Hearthside Assisted Living Unit was opened in 1992 for residents who
need some assistance on a daily basis. And In 1997, the first of 36 residential cottages
was opened for seniors who want maximum independence with the assurance of the LifeCare
benefit and the convenience of total home maintenance.
To further enhance our LifeCare services,
Westminster Canterbury, Lynchburg has added a state of the art
Wellness Center including the 24 by 54 foot enclosed pool,
exercise room and an improved health clinic. This unique health
facility provides more opportunities to encourage the active
lifestyle enjoyed by Westminster Canterbury residents.
And in 2002, the Wood’s Edge apartment addition
was completed. These 40 upscale residences meet the changing
desires of today ’s retirees who demand more gracious
appointments, amenities and space. At the same time, the entire
Westminster Canterbury facility was upgraded to include enhanced
formal and casual dining facilities, a new 14-bed memory support
unit, and extensive renovation of other community amenities.
Long known for quality service and care,
Westminster Canterbury was one of the first continuing care
retirement communities in Virginia. Westminster Canterbury was
also one of the first communities in the United States
accredited by the Continuing Care Accreditation Commission of
the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging. It
Is governed by a volunteer Board of Trustees from Lynchburg,
Roanoke, and other areas throughout Southwestern Virginia, and
continues to be guided by the high standards of the Episcopal
and Presbyterian churches.
