Westminster Canterbury - Getting to Know Us
Affiliated with the Episcopal and Presbyterian churches, Westminster Canterbury is guided by Christian ideals and nearly 30 years of creating the best possible environment for our resident members. Our mission is to promote independence and dignity, premium quality healthcare and security in resort-like surroundings. Proven leadership, skilled management and resident involvement enable us to understand and meet your needs today and in the future.
Established as a nonprofit corporation in 1975 by the Episcopal Diocese of Southwestern Virginia and The Synod of the Mid-Atlantic of the Presbyterian Church, the LifeCare community of Westminster Canterbury opened July 14, 1980 with residential apartments and the Drinkard Health Center. A beautiful bridge connecting the apartment residences with the healthcare centers brought architectural accolades. Forward-thinking in its design and purpose, the Westminster Canterbury of the 1980s included fine dining, beauty and barber shops, recreational and meeting facilities, banking, postal and administrative areas.
As the dynamics of our population and the needs of seniors changed, we opened Hearthside for assisted living in 1992. In 1997, new residents seeking maximum independence with the assurance of LifeCare opened the doors to cottage living.
In 2002, we completed a $22 million expansion and renovation project that touched every aspect of Westminster Canterbury. LifeCare services were expanded with a state-of-the-art Wellness Center featuring a heated pool, exercise room and health clinic offering new options in care. Woods Edge, with its luxurious private residences, provides a gracious lifestyle choice to new retirees. We enhanced our formal and casual dining areas, added new private rooms in healthcare and a memory support center and made extensive renovations to other community amenities.
Long known for our quality service, friendly staff and compassionate care, Westminster Canterbury was one of the first continuing care retirement communities in Virginia. We were also one of the first in the United States to be accredited by the Continuing Care Accreditation Commission (CCAC-CARF). Governed by a volunteer Board of Trustees from Lynchburg, Roanoke and other regions throughout southwestern Virginia, Westminster Canterbury continues to be guided by the high standards of the Episcopal and Presbyterian churches.
Our future is bright. Our residents are living a Life Refreshed.
